Crypto tax accountant in Newcastle

A Newcastle crypto holder who works with us gets every exchange export and wallet address rebuilt into one ledger, and a Self Assessment return filed from the gain that ledger shows. The gov.uk capital gains tax rates page, read on 8 October 2026, puts the 2026 to 2027 rates at 18% inside the basic rate band and 24% above it, with the first £3,000 of gains tax free and the basic rate band at £37,700. Which rate your gain falls into depends on your taxable income, so we read the ledger and your payslip or accounts together before anything is filed.

What does a crypto tax accountant do for a Newcastle investor

The ledger comes first and takes most of the time. We collect every exchange export and every wallet address you can still reach, match each withdrawal to the deposit it became, and only then run HMRC’s pooling rules over the whole history. The gov.uk guidance on tax when you sell cryptoassets, last updated on 5 October 2026 and read on 8 October 2026, says an exchange report is not a tax calculation and will not keep track of your pooled costs. A software report nobody has checked usually carries the same errors, and the gain it prints is often higher than the gain you owe tax on. Our guide to what you pay on crypto gains in 2026 to 2027 works the rules through with figures.

Once the ledger is right the return is the short part. The same gov.uk page says Self Assessment returns from the 2024 to 2025 tax year onwards carry a cryptoasset section, and the gain goes there in pounds sterling. You see the full computation and sign it off before we file. The crypto tax accountants page sets out the engagement from first call to filed return, and the services page covers the disclosure and company work we also take on.

Do I pay tax when I give crypto to my husband, wife or civil partner

No, and the transfer can cut the bill when the coins are eventually sold. The gov.uk page on gifts to your spouse or civil partner, read on 8 October 2026, says you do not pay capital gains tax on assets you give or sell to your husband, wife or civil partner. The two exceptions it lists are a couple who separated and did not live together at all in that tax year, and goods handed over for the partner’s business to sell on. The gain does not disappear. When your partner later sells, gov.uk says their gain is worked out on the difference between the value when you first owned the asset and the value when they disposed of it, so they take over your original cost and should keep a record of what you paid.

That is where the saving comes from. Each of you has your own £3,000 allowance for 2026 to 2027 and your own basic rate band, and the rate on a gain follows the taxable income of the person who makes the disposal. A holder on a higher rate salary who gives half of a position to a partner with little other income will usually see that half taxed at 18% rather than 24%, after a second £3,000 comes off. The transfer has to be real, which means the coins move to a wallet or exchange account your partner controls, and the date and the amount have to be recorded because HMRC will ask for the partner’s acquisition cost when they sell. Our article on how capital gains tax treats a gift explains the market value rule, and our guide to ways to pay less crypto tax that HMRC accepts puts the spouse transfer alongside the other lawful routes.

A gift to anyone else is different. The gov.uk guidance on selling cryptoassets, read the same day, lists giving tokens to another person as a disposal unless the gift is to a spouse, civil partner or charity, and says the gain is worked out at market value where the two sides are connected persons. Handing coins to an adult child, a sibling or a friend therefore triggers tax as if you had sold them that day. Our article on gifting crypto outside marriage covers that case, and if the gift is part of a separation, how crypto is split and taxed in a UK divorce explains what changes once a couple stops living together.

Is crypto my employer pays me taxed as income

Yes, on the day you receive it. The gov.uk guidance on tax when you receive cryptoassets, read on 8 October 2026, says tokens received from employment count as money’s worth and the value is subject to Income Tax and National Insurance contributions. Exchange tokens such as bitcoin are readily convertible assets, and for those a UK employer must put the tax through PAYE before paying you. The employer estimates the sterling value of the tokens, pays the Income Tax and National Insurance on that estimate, and deducts it from the other wages you receive in the same period. The same page adds that it is your responsibility to check the right tax reached HMRC, which in practice means keeping the payslip that shows the deduction and the wallet record that shows what arrived.

If the token is not readily convertible, gov.uk says to ask your employer whether the tax went through PAYE, and if it did not, you pay it yourself through a Self Assessment return completed in pounds sterling. Either way the tokens then enter your pool at the value that was taxed as income. When you sell them later, the gov.uk guidance says you work out capital gains tax as normal on any increase since you received them, and the selling guidance confirms you do not pay capital gains tax on the part of the value that already suffered Income Tax. Our article on being paid in crypto goes through a payslip line by line.

Tokens from mining, staking or lending outside a trade are treated by HMRC as other taxable income, with a £1,000 allowance for trading and miscellaneous income across all sources. Above £2,500 of such income gov.uk says to register for Self Assessment. Our guides to how crypto mining is taxed twice and what HMRC says about staking rewards cover the records you need for each.

Is crypto held on an overseas exchange a foreign asset for HMRC

In HMRC’s view it is located wherever you are resident, so for a Newcastle holder the coins on an exchange based abroad are a UK asset. The page in HMRC’s Cryptoassets Manual on the location of exchange tokens, read on 8 October 2026, says a token that is a digital representation of an underlying asset, such as a coin backed by a gold bar, takes the location of that asset. For a token with no underlying asset, which covers bitcoin and most of what people hold, HMRC’s view is that the only identifiable party is the beneficial owner, so the token is located where that owner is resident. The manual calls this a clear and predictable rule and spells out the consequence, that a UK resident under the Statutory Residence Test is liable to UK tax on a transaction with their tokens that is subject to UK tax, wherever the exchange sits.

Two details from the same page matter for a return. Where tokens are co-owned, each owner’s interest is located where that owner is resident, so a UK resident who shares a wallet with someone abroad still has a UK asset for their share. And the manual says the location question is relevant to the offshore penalty regime and the Requirement to Correct, which is why a holder who assumed an exchange abroad put the coins outside HMRC’s reach should not rely on that assumption when deciding whether to disclose. Our articles on whether HMRC can see your crypto wallet and what the large exchanges send to HMRC cover the data side, and the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework piece explains which overseas platforms will report and when.

For the return itself the gain goes in the cryptoasset section like any other, in pounds sterling, with each disposal converted at the rate on its own date. If you have left the UK or plan to, residence changes the answer and our article on why moving abroad does not end a UK crypto tax bill sets out the rules that follow you.

How much does a crypto tax accountant cost in Newcastle

The same as anywhere else in the UK, because the work is the same. Published prices from UK firms that do crypto tax, checked in September 2026, put one fully reconciled and filed year at £750 to £2,000. A clean software report that only needs checking and filing can come in at £300 or under. A year of heavy DeFi or NFT activity tends to cost £1,200 to £2,500, and several missed years with a disclosure to HMRC usually run to £1,500 to £3,500. Our breakdown of what accountants charge for a tax return in 2026 shows where those bands come from.

What moves the quote is how many places the history is spread across and whether each of them still gives you an export. We give one fixed quote after a free review, and the pricing page lets you run your own numbers first.

Is there a Newcastle office

No. The practice is remote and works with UK taxpayers only. Crypto records are files, so there is nothing to hand over in person. You upload your exports through a secure link, we go through them with you on a video call, and the person you speak to first stays on your file until the return is filed.

We also looked for something about crypto that names Newcastle and can be checked, such as an FCA press release, a tribunal decision or an HMRC announcement, and as of 8 October 2026 there was nothing to cite. This page therefore makes no local claims. The work is remote across the UK, and a Newcastle client gets the same process as a client in Sunderland or Plymouth.

Which crypto tax problems do you fix most often

These four come in from every part of the UK, and the North East is no different.

Transfers between your own wallets counted as sales

Moving coins from an exchange to a hardware wallet is not a disposal, yet software that sees only one side of the move books a sale on that side and a purchase at zero cost on the other, and the gain climbs. Our guide to tax when moving crypto between wallets shows the pattern, and our article on why crypto tax software gets UK returns wrong covers the other places it slips.

Losses that were never claimed

A loss only reduces future gains once HMRC has been told about it, and you have four years from the end of the tax year of the disposal to claim. A loss made in 2022 to 2023 has to be claimed by 5 April 2027. See how unclaimed capital losses expire, and our guide to using crypto losses to cut your capital gains bill shows how to realise one without the 30 day rule cancelling it.

Several years that were never reported

How far back HMRC can go depends on why the years were missed, which our article on the four, six, twelve and twenty year limits sets out. Coming forward through the voluntary disclosure route before HMRC writes keeps the penalty percentage lower, and the ranges are in our guide to how much HMRC can charge for unpaid crypto tax.

A letter from HMRC about crypto

A nudge letter asks you to check your own return and is answered with a corrected figure or a reasoned reply. A formal enquiry is a different document with its own deadlines, and our article on what happens during an HMRC crypto enquiry walks through the stages. In both cases the history is rebuilt before anyone replies. Our guide to the HMRC crypto nudge letter explains what the first kind is asking for.

Do you work with clients outside Newcastle

Yes, anywhere in the UK. Down the A1 there is a crypto tax accountant page for Leeds, and north of the border the crypto tax accountant page for Edinburgh covers Scottish taxpayers, whose income tax bands change where the 24% rate starts. The people who do the work, and the standard every figure is checked against, are on the about page.

Crypto tax questions from Newcastle investors

Do I need a crypto tax accountant based in Newcastle?

No. Crypto records are exchange exports and wallet histories, so the whole job is done on screen. Files come in through a secure upload link, we talk them through on a video call, and you approve the return before it is filed. A client in Newcastle gets the same process as a client anywhere else in the UK.

Can I give crypto to my wife or husband to use both capital gains allowances?

Yes. Gov.uk says there is no capital gains tax on assets you give to your spouse or civil partner, and they take over your original cost. Each of you then has your own £3,000 allowance for 2026 to 2027 and your own rate band, so splitting a position before a sale can bring part of the gain down from 24% to 18%. The coins must actually move to an account your partner controls, and the date and amount need recording.

My employer pays part of my salary in crypto. How is it taxed?

As employment income on the day you receive it, with Income Tax and National Insurance on the sterling value. For tokens such as bitcoin the employer must run the tax through PAYE and deduct it from your other wages, and gov.uk says it is your responsibility to check the right amount reached HMRC. The tokens then sit in your pool at that value, and only the rise after that date is a capital gain when you sell.

Does crypto on an exchange based abroad count as a foreign asset?

In HMRC’s view, no. Its Cryptoassets Manual says a token with no underlying asset is located where its beneficial owner is resident, so a UK resident’s coins on an exchange abroad are a UK asset and any disposal is taxed in the UK as normal. The gain goes in the cryptoasset section of the return in pounds sterling.

How much does a crypto tax accountant in Newcastle charge?

Published prices from UK firms that do crypto tax, checked in September 2026, put one reconciled and filed year at £750 to £2,000, and a first return with a single exchange usually sits at the low end. A year with heavy DeFi activity tends to cost £1,200 to £2,500. We give one fixed quote after a free review.

Who does the work on my file?

Fahad Zar, lead chain analyst and crypto tax expert, rebuilds the history and reviews every return. Sehar Javed, chain analyst, works the reconciliation with him. The person you speak to on the first call stays on your file until it is filed.
