How much a crypto accountant actually costs
Every firm makes you book a call to hear a number. We price from four measurable things, so we put the whole engine on the page instead. Set it to your situation and read the range we would quote you.
A fixed written quote follows a free look at your actual files. It usually lands inside this range and sometimes under it.
A history this size starts with a short scoping pass so the fixed quote is right first time. Whatever it costs comes off the final bill in full.
Estimates are indicative and become a fixed written quote after the free health check. Quotes stay valid for 14 days. Half is payable to start, half on delivery. Prices are the full amount, with no VAT added on top.
What this estimate was built from
Prepared by Certified Crypto Accountant, a trading name of Zar Enterprises Ltd. This is an indicative estimate rather than a quotation. A fixed written quote follows a free health check of your actual files and stays valid for 14 days. Prices carry no VAT.

The three errors we find most often
Software imports thousands of transactions correctly and still gets the few events wrong that decide your tax. Fixing those is what our reconciliation service does, and it is the middle line of your estimate.
The software said he owed tax on £46,000 he never sold.
A two bitcoin move between his own wallets, recorded as a disposal. We matched the transfer, the phantom gain disappeared, and the bill fell with it. This is the single most common error we find.
Twenty movements on chain. Two in the report.
A hardware wallet the software barely read, leaving invented cost basis on everything it missed. We rebuilt the history line by line from the public ledger until every coin had its true cost.
Five thousand transactions across twenty one venues. The report was right.
Derivatives on six platforms, staking rewards, bridges across five chains, and after a full check the numbers held. We said so in writing, and the client paid for filing, not for a rebuild he did not need.
What happens after you say yes
Fixed before we start
The quote is written down before any work begins, and it states exactly what is included. No hourly meters running in the background.
Half to start
Half the fee starts the work. The rest is due when the finished result is in your hands and you are happy with it.
Clean means clean
If the free health check finds your report is already right, we tell you that in writing and you pay nothing for the check.
Quotes stay put
A written quote holds for 14 days and does not creep once work starts. Anything outside the agreed scope is agreed in writing first.
What the rest of the market charges
In September 2026 we checked the published prices of more than forty UK and US firms. Most specialists publish nothing at all. Across the whole industry we found exactly one instant fee calculator, at a US law firm, and none in the UK. Here is what the market looks like once you dig the numbers out.
Bands compiled September 2026 from published price lists, firm disclosures and two independent 2026 UK cost guides. The scale is logarithmic. The cheapest bundles exist because the client does the reconciliation themselves, and that reconciliation is what usually goes wrong. Before you hire anyone at any price, read what to ask a crypto accountant before engaging them.
Four things set the price. Nothing else does.
How many tax years are open
Each year is its own computation with its own allowances, losses and paperwork. Five years means five jobs, plus the disclosure that usually comes with them.
How many transactions there are
Volume matters, but far less than people expect. A thousand identical trades on one exchange take an afternoon. Fifty transactions across six dead protocols can take a week.
Whether your platforms still exist
A dead exchange means rebuilding records nobody can hand you any more, from the chain and whatever exports survived. It is the slowest work we do.
How much your software already has right
This moves the number more than the other three. Two portfolios with identical transaction counts can sit at opposite ends of the fee scale. What separates them is how much of the history is already true, because nobody should pay us to rebuild what is already correct.
Doubling your transactions does not double your fee
The gold line is our engine for a typical single year case. The faint line is what the fee would look like if every transaction cost the same to handle.
Questions people ask before they call
How much does a crypto accountant cost in the UK?
For a single tax year including proper reconciliation, UK specialist firms typically charge between £750 and £2,000. Simple cases filed from a clean software report can cost £300 or less, heavy DeFi years commonly run £1,200 to £2,500, and multi year catch ups with a disclosure to HMRC usually land between £1,500 and £3,500.
The calculator at the top of this page places your own case on that scale in about twenty seconds, and our services page sets out exactly what each stage includes.
Why does crypto cost more than a normal tax return?
A normal return starts from documents that are already correct, such as a P60 or a broker statement. A crypto return usually starts from software output that is wrong, with transfers booked as sales, missing cost basis and gaps where a platform died. Most of the fee pays for making the numbers true before anything is filed. A £150 filing service does not do that work.
What makes the fee go up?
Four things. More open tax years, more transactions, platforms that no longer exist, and records your software has wrong. Of those, the condition of your records moves the number most. Volume matters least, which surprises people, and it is why we never price purely per transaction.
I have tens of thousands of transactions. Can you even handle that?
Yes. Large histories with DeFi, derivatives and NFTs are normal work for us. The per transaction cost falls sharply at that scale, and for the biggest cases we run a short scoping pass first so the fixed quote is right the first time. Whatever the scoping costs comes off the final bill in full.
Do you charge by the hour?
No. Every engagement is a fixed written fee agreed before work starts. The only hourly rate we have is £150 for work outside an agreed scope, and it is only ever used after you approve it in writing.
Is the estimate on this page binding?
No. It is an estimate. The number becomes fixed after the free health check, where we look at your actual files and confirm what the software got wrong. The written quote usually lands inside the range shown, sometimes under it, and it stays valid for 14 days.
Turn the estimate into a real number
Send us your software report and within 48 hours you will know whether it is right, what is wrong with it, and the fixed price to fix it. If it is clean, we say so and you pay nothing.
